Biography
The Toombs County Detention Center, proudly renamed the Charles Durst Detention Center after the passing of former Sheriff Charles Durst in 1997, is a 220-bed facility located in the eastern part of the Sheriff’s Office complex.
This county jail is the primary holding facility for the Toombs County Sheriff’s Department as well as the Lyons and Vidalia Municipal Police Departments, and for arrests made by State Agencies in Toombs County.
County jails hold not only convicted inmates pending sentence or transfer to state facilities, but also pre-trial arrestees pending court or trial, State or Misdemeanor Probationers, State Parolees pending revocation, etc. Typical for a county jail that serves many functions for the court and the community, there are generally many types of arrestees in a general population cell at any time.
Inmates booked into the Toombs County Detention Center are in the custody of the Toombs County Sheriff, and in being so, are the responsibility of the Sheriff. The Sheriff has appointed a Chief Jailer, the Jail Administrator, to oversee and operate the jail as his designee.
At the Toombs Detention Center, we provide all needs mandated by the State of Georgia, including medical care, meals, and an online law library. We boast state of the art communication systems that allow inmates to be in contact with their family and legal counsel, as well as the courts. We also have an up-to-date commissary system that allows inmates to purchase grocery and healthcare items at the same costs you would find in a local store. Our facility allows “store call” twice a week, and meals are served three times daily. In addition to all the things we are mandated to provide, we also provide access to Substance Abuse Recovery Resources, Mental Heath Resources, and other re-entry resources and services. Arrestees, if they so choose, can take advantage of many of these services so that they can better their quality of life upon returning to the community.
